Because it's a French loan word? Like... English wasn't created out of thin air and during its development it was influenced by several different languages. It might just as well be the language with the most words of foreign origin (e.g. German, French, Latin)

In swedish the word island is pronounced and spelled like Ö which is also a letter in the swedish alphabet. Be like the Swedes and don't add a bunch o useless letters.

In Swedish we say "KÖ" which is pronounced exactly as it is spelled, but also we say kön. Which means "the queue" but in a different context it also means gender. And if you have a reading disability like I have it could really get confusing sometimes. If you have any questions ask the kapten. (Me)
